WJF 2016

It’s that time again… the one week of the year when you have loads of jazz gigs, get decent coin and great audiences and generally feel like you haven’t made a terrible mistake somewhere in your life choices… That’s right, it’s the Wellington Jazz Festival!

You can check out the whole program on the WJF website (the link is on my homepage) but I thought I’d put up everything I’m doing in case you’re planning on stalking me

WEDNESDAY JUNE 8th

Callum Allardice Quintet: 6pm at The Third Eye, $10 on the door 

Original modern jazz from New Zealand’s jazz composer of the year – that’s right, it’s a thing.

TTE Jazz Jam: 10pm(ish) at The Third Eye, koha 

Me and the house band will play a few tunes, then open things up for other musicians to sit in

THURSDAY JUNE 9th

Blues and the Abstract Truth: 10pm at The Rogue and Vagabond, $5 

Oliver Nelson’s pivotal album played front-to-back by a sextet led by Michael Costeloe

FRIDAY JUNE 10th

Le Jazz Hot – Three Tenors: 8pm at Caroline, $10

A trio led by John Rae burning under three tenor sax players in some rip-roaring bebop; Roger Manins, Colin Hemmingsen and myself. Yikes!

JB3: 10pm at Hashigo Zake, free

Standards, swung bossas and soul jazz with Cory Champion and Chris Yeabsley

SATURDAY JUNE 11th

Lex French Double Quintet – Matariki Suite: 6pm at St Peter’s on Willis, free

Lex French brings together a jazz quartet and a string quartet to play a suite of music inspired by and dedicated to Matariki. One of several free shows curated by the festival at St Peter’s all worth checking out!

Wellington Night Market – Mundi: 8pm on lower Cuba St, free

Christchurch flautist and composer Tamara Smith brings her incredible afro beat flavoured jazz to the Wellington Night Market. Festive AND delicious!

The Wellington Mingus Ensemble: 10.30pm at The Southern Cross, free/koha

The Mingii are getting together with singers Lisa Tomlins and George Rutherford to bring a rousing set of Mingus’ music to the cross. Some banging classics, some new vocal stylings – should be a goody!

SUNDAY JUNE 12th

The Troubles: 8pm at Meow, $15

The Troubles are back at Meow for a night of music and mayhem. It’s being recorded live so get amongst, hoot holler and be immortalised!

TTE Jazz Jam: 10pm(ish) at The Third Eye, koha

Another night of hangs and jams. This will be the last thing on at the festival so come along and we’ll play it out in style!
